About the organisation

The Hungarian National Self-governing Community in Prekmurje (abbreviated: MMÖNK) is the central organization responsible for the self-government, advocacy, and other political activities and tasks of the indigenous Hungarian national community living in Prekmurje.
Its legal predecessor was established in 1975 on the basis of Article 64 of the Constitution. The current organization operates in accordance with the Constitution and the Law on National Self-Governing Communities.

The MMÖNK's jurisdiction primarily covers universal Hungarian tasks in the Mura region, as well as regional and national tasks, over the Hungarian national self-governing communities in the municipalities.
Its main activities include direct cooperation with state institutions in the Republic of Slovenia and Hungary, as well as maintaining relations with Hungarian organizations across the border and other international minority protection institutions and organizations.

The MMÖNK is the negotiating partner of state bodies in the enforcement of the rights of the Hungarian nationality.

The most important tasks of the MMÖNK are to protect and develop the Hungarian community in the Mura region's native language, national consciousness, and material and spiritual heritage, to enforce its national interests, and to promote the exercise of the rights guaranteed by the constitution and the law.

The highest body of the MMÖNK is the Council, to which the Hungarian local governments delegate members:

  • Lendava Municipal Hungarian National Self-Government Community (10 members)
  • Dobronak Municipal Hungarian National Self-Government Community (4 members)
  • Moravske Toplice Municipal Hungarian National Self-Government Community (3 members)
  • Šalovci Municipal Hungarian National Self-Government Community (2 members)
  • Hodos Hungarian National Local Government Community (2 members)

(The MMÖNK Council currently has 19 members, as the Hungarian National Self-Governing Community of Lendava has delegated only 8 members to the MMÖNK Council instead of 10.)

The Hungarian National Community of Local Governments in Muravidék is the founder of four public institutions (Hungarian National Cultural Institute, Hungarian National Information Institute, Hungarian Regional National Development Institute Lendva, Bánutai Muravidéki Model Farm) and Minta Kft., as well as co-founder of the Lendava Bilingual Secondary School and MURABA ETT.
