About the organisation
The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) was founded on 25 December 1989, immediately after the Romanian revolution, when opportunities arose for political pluralism and the representation of the interests of national minorities. From the outset, the RMDSZ's goal has been to represent the political interests of the Hungarian community in Romania and to establish and expand their cultural and linguistic rights. The organisation acts as the most important representative body for Hungarians in Transylvania, both in local government and parliament, as well as in the European Parliament.
The RMDSZ is one of the cornerstones of preserving Hungarian identity in Romania. It not only functions as a political party, but also brings together and supports a network of civil and cultural organisations. Its role is twofold: on the one hand, it ensures the representation of the Hungarian minority within the Romanian political system, and on the other hand, it fulfils a community-building and identity-preserving function.
The RMDSZ's political weight is well demonstrated by its continuous parliamentary presence since 1990. On several occasions, it has been invited by Romanian political parties to participate in government, playing a stabilising role in the country's political life as a pragmatic coalition partner providing a high level of professionalism. During these periods, it was also possible to assert the interests of the Hungarian community and local governments through governmental means.
The RMDSZ works in several areas: it has created the legal framework for the operation of Hungarian educational institutions, from nurseries to universities, as well as for church, cultural and civil organisations, and for the use of the mother tongue in public administration, ensuring their budgetary support. It played a decisive role in the legal regulation of the restitution of private property and church and community assets. It plays an important role in accelerating decentralisation processes, strengthening local autonomy and multiplying national budgetary and EU funds allocated to support local development. It keeps the issue of autonomy in Székely Land on the agenda.
Overall, the RMDSZ has been a decisive factor in the life of the Hungarian community in Romania for more than three decades. Through its activities, it contributes to the prosperity of the Hungarian community in its homeland, Transylvania.
