About the organisation
The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians was founded on 18 June 1994, as a civil organisation for protecting interests and evolved into a political party one year later. The founding president was Csubela Ferenc. During his term, the core of our struggle was the right to remain Hungarians in our motherland.
Following his tragic death, Kasza Jozsef took over the leadership, under whose guidance the struggle focused on ensuring not being persecuted on our own land simply because we were Hungarians. The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians was an opposition party, standing against the then-regime, leading protests and preventing the conscription of Hungarian young men to the front.
In 1996, we entered the Federal parliament of the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and until 2004, we were a parliamentary party at the national level. Afterwards, in the period from 2004 to 2007, a brief pause followed, but since 2007 we have continuously been a parliamentary party. We have run almost all elections independently and have won parliamentary seats. The exception was the period from 2000 to 2003, when AVH was one of the 18 members of the Democratic opposition of Serbia, meaning that the party also had a significant role in the change of the regime. To date, we have recorded 18 years in power and 13 years in opposition.
In 1999, an Interim Hungarian National Council was established. The decision on its establishment was made at the time when the country was bombarded, but just three years later, the National Council became a category recognised by the law and the Constitution.
Since 2007, a period under the leadership of Pásztor István began. His presidency was associated with historic reconciliation. A strategic partnership was established between the two countries, interstate projects were implemented and instead of the symbolic politics, he introduced a project-based politics. He founded the Hungarian coalition, created partnership with religious and civil organisations and established an alliance to support survival and advancement in the motherland. He also launched the economic development programme.
After his death in 2023, the party has been led by Pásztor Balint, PhD, in very challenging circumstances.
